Following on from the party vibes of the Smile Plenty EP and the songs of history and family of The Empire Windrush EP the Free I EP brings us bang up to date in broken Britain, but it is still rooted in the music of the Caribbean. A Night in Port of Spain opens the EP and describes the beauty and majesty of the landscape around the city of Port of Spain in Trinidad in the Southern Caribbean. This is contrasted with a toasted version which follows and tells the very different story of a refugee from England returning to the comparative safety of ‘Trini’. The EP title track Free I sees Spider singing about his life as a session musician in London and musically references Dubwiser’s deep roots in UK hip hop, having worked with artists such as Fusion, Seanie T, Killa Kela and many others. The Jackal was written by Jonas during the covid lockdowns and it captures a sense of danger and paranoia and the raw aesthetic of the track is a tribute to one of the bands great mentors, Lee Scratch Perry. The EP closes with To Hell 4 a Piece o’ Bread which broaches the realities of racial tensions between the Met police and the black communities of London and it has a sound that is unique to UK reggae. Spider is the go-to backing singer for Madness and To Hell 4 a Piece o’ Bread references their sound. Utilising roots reggae and UK hip hop stylings Free I EP speaks of persecution and frustration contrasted with a deep sense of empowerment and hope and it further cements Dubwiser's standing as one of the great bands of the UK reggae scene.

The core of Dubwiser is Jonas Torrance, a highly respected Oxford musician and songwriter who emerged on the band scene alongside luminaries such as Ride, Radiohead and Supergrass and Spider J, a London based producer and multi-instrumentalist who has collaborated with a host of big names including Mad Professor, Stevie Wonder, UK Apache, and Dub Pistols. He was even a long-standing selector/vocalist & keyboardist for the legendary Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry. Along with John and Eddy these four are musicians of an undeniable pedigree and firm favorites on the UK festival circuit.
